Have you ever thought about what it would be like to loose your memory or feel confused so much that you cannot function normally in your everyday life? These are a few of the questions that motivated me to design the Remember Me Crochet Fidget Blanket pattern.

One day, many years ago, I was reading an article, in it Alzheimer’s was mentioned. Though I was familiar with some other illnesses like Parkinson’s, I had never heard of Alzheimer’s. It led me on a research that opened my eyes to the debilitating nature of the illness, which in turn led me to the creative ways the symptoms can be managed.

With all the information I gathered, I was plunged into a contemplative state for a long time. I could not get the information I had learnt about out of my head, I saw the world a little differently, I thought of aging, death and the life afterwards. It made me question many things about life and what I was making of it.

Having also discovered that there were other resources to help manage the symptoms, I got inspired to design the Remember Me Crochet Fidget Blanket. Each block was designed with the thought of what it would feel like to remember a texture, a pattern or an exercise from everyday life.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A (CROCHET) FIDGET BLANKET?

I did wonder about this too at the beginning, from research, I see that it really helps with the restlessness that comes with the disease. The anxiety and disorientation can be managed with fidget blankets, as it keeps the individual engaged in a focused activity. According to Google AI, “Fidget blankets help people with dementia by providing a safe outlet for restless hands, reducing anxiety and agitation, and stimulating senses and memories through tactile activities like buttons, zippers, and different fabrics. By occupying their hands, these blankets offer a source of comfort, calm, and sensory engagement, which can improve overall well-being“.

CONSTRUCTION

Each block has something different to stimulate sensory activity and keep the hands busy.

Each block measures 7.5 inches wide by 6 inches tall, approximately. Yours could measure more or less depending on the tension of your fabric. All the blocks are made individually, then joined at the end.

MATERIALS

You may find that many of the materials you need for this Crochet Fidget Blanket are items you already have. It also creates a good opportunity to recycle and reuse things like button on old, torn shirts, or the shoe lace on a long forgotten sneaker. For the notions, you want to be cautious to use notions that are not easy to bite off, especially the beads and buttons.

  • Worsted or Aran weight yarn- You might want to use a mixture of cotton and acrylic blend for a sturdier fabric. You could also use only either of the fibres, as available to you. 3 balls of 100g yarn will be more than enough.
    • 25mtrs, Colourful DK yarn in different fibres- for the fringes.
  • Crochet Hooks- you would need a 5mm hook throughout. However, for the starting chains, it is recommended to use a 4.5mm hook. Why? to avoid the first row being wider than the rest of the rows.
  • Notions- you would need
    • 6 buttons in different size
    • 4 buttons in the same size
    • 34 wood beads
    • 1 or 2 zips (6 inches by long by half an inch wide) Optional zip if you’d like to add another zip to the blanket
    • 1 shoe lace
