I like layers, a lot. I like simple wears just as much, and I can tell you that the Noncho Poncho is a simple but lovely garment to make and wear. It was inspired by this poncho I saw years ago; I was so captivated by how elegantly it hung on the wall, I had to save the picture as ‘inspiration for later’; later turned out to be two years. While the Noncho Poncho follows a similar construction as the inspiration, it has a different look.
This pattern is part of the Christmas in July Crochet-along hosted by Marie of The Undergroundcrafter. In 2022, I participated with this tank top, it was my first for women. There are many beautiful patterns from many fantastic designers you can choose from, so be sure to visit Marie’s website to see them all and participate in the giveaway.
THE STITCH
This free crochet poncho pattern uses mainly double crochet and chains in a group of blocks. While the upper part looks like a granny stitch, it is mainly blocks of 4 stitches each, plus chain two spaces. The lower part uses also uses a form of block stitches in a way that allows easy transition of the two yarn colours.
I quite like the stitches on the bottom part, and will be using it to design a crochet blanket in multiple sizes.
CONSTRUCTION
Almost similar to the City Walk Crochet Ruana, the Noncho Poncho is done in parts- the upper parts and the lower parts. First, we crochet the upper part which consists of the back and front panels using the granny stitch mimic. Then we move to the lower part, which also consists two parts- these parts are done in the same way on each of the upper panels.
CUSTOMISE
This crochet poncho pattern is done in a multiple of six stitches. If you wanted to smaller or bigger, it starts from the starting chains. This post gives small/medium size, with a starting chain of 6×12+4.
The number of rows you have on one side of the panel is the same number you want to have on the other side, the number of rows in the middle is will be the shortest. For the size in this post is, we have 38-21-38, that is, 38 rows on one side, 21 rows in the middle and 38 rows on the other side.
It is pretty simple, you only need to increase or decrease the starting chains for a shorter or longer poncho and crochet more or less rows on either sides for a smaller or wider poncho. The lower part is the easiest as it is done the same way for both front and back panels.
BLOCK
The Noncho Poncho crochet pattern will not be complete without mentioning that it should be blocked after completion. Even though the pattern uses DK weight yarn, it will feel stiff until all the stitches are stretched out. So please, block you noncho poncho. You can see this photo for how I blocked mine.
