When I was going to name this crochet cover-up, I was in that slumber space between sleep and contemplation and the name that came to my mind was ‘city walk’. I decided not to overthink it and just went with it. What would you have named it?
One of the things I like about ruanas is the ease with which they can be worn and the comfort they provide. The city walk crochet cover-up is one such layer. It drapes lovingly over you. It can be worn over pants, a dress or as a beachwear.
THE STITCH
The City Walk Crochet Cover-up uses the chevron crochet stitch; a distinct wavy design that creates ‘peaks’ and ‘valley’- as I call the high and low points. The chevron crochet stitch is different from the ripple crochet stitch, in that while the chevron had sharper curves, like a zig-zag, ripples have softer curves; which can be likened to curls. Depending on the number of starting chains, it can be done is many multiples as seen in the chevron stitch infinity scarf. This pattern however, gives you the number of multiples needed.

CONSTRUCTION
This crochet ruana cardigan is made in three major parts- the upper part, which consists of two joined pieces. The lower part which consists the extension of the back and front panels. The third part, which is the trimming of the inner front panels and sides of the ruana.
Each upper piece has a ‘set’ of repeated stitches, the set consists five rows of spaced and solid, and three rows of solid stitches. The last rows are the three solid stitches, then the piece is folded in half and other half is completed in three more rows. Due to the lengthy instruction, this pattern has been split in two parts. This post covers the upper part.
CUSTOMISE
The city walk crochet cover-up can be customised for a wider or longer fit depending on the size of the recipient, it can also be made into a cardigan by sewing the upper sides up to the armhole. Add one or two more sets to each horizontal piece before joining.
The pattern calls for sport weight yarn, so one other way to customise this crochet ruana while following the pattern exactly is to use DK yarn and a larger hook.

BLOCK
Due to the spaced stitching, you will have a stretchy fabric. Like I often mention in my patterns blocking is crucial to the overall result of your piece. I can’t overemphasize it enough, please block your piece.
How to Block- You can use a steam iron to hover over the piece from top to bottom and over all the sides or you can dip the piece in water (or run it in the washing washing), squeeze out the water, lay the fabric on a pin-able surface and pin down while stretching all sides.
