I have named this women crochet tank top the SOMM Crochet Tank Top. Let me tell you what SOMM stands for- “sunshine on my mind”. Truly, when I was making this top, I thought of summer, the beauty of the sun. Even the yarn colour reflects that too.

The SOMM women crochet tank top is made with double crochet and single crochet stitches. The single crochet stitches are made in between the double crochet stitches, the right side of the single crochet stitches becomes the right side of the top. Colour changing on the SOMM crochet tank top is optional. You can use one colour throughout or add a contrast colour at the point mentioned in the pattern.

THE YARN
Let’s talk about the yarn briefly. This pattern calls for cotton yarn, however, you can use a blend of cotton/acrylic or acrylic yarn as well, just ensure to use one of good quality so that it does not itch your skin. The cotton/acrylic blend or acrylic will actually stretch better after blocking; fabrics from those yarn fibre tend to have better drape (unless you were using a really thin cotton yarn). In essence, you can use any yarn fibre available to you, so long as it matches the gauge of the pattern.
BLOCK
I will mention that the SOMM women crochet tank top needs to be blocked. Really if you want to get the best out of it, please block it. It will loosen the stitches, and make it ‘sit’ better on you.

BACK PANEL
Note: the exact number of stitches on each side is not given to avoid inconsistency in the pattern. However, it is easy to figure out by marking 2 stitches in the middle, then counting the rest of the stitches on each side to get the same number of stitches. It can range from 26 to 30 on each side, depending on the size being made. Also note that the marking is done on the SC row.
Repeat rows 1-69 (69, 71, 71, 75, 77, 79) as done for the front panel. At the end of the last row, Ch 2, turn.
Before beginning the next row, mark the stitches, with 2 stitches in the middle and the same number of stitches on each side of the panel.
Row 70 (70, 72, 72, 76, 78, 80): DC in next st and each st across. Ch 1, turn
Row 71 (71, 73, 73, 77, 79, 81): SC in 1st st and each st across till last 2 sts, SC2tog in last st. Ch 2, turn
Row 72 (72, 74, 74, 78, 80, 82): DC in next st and each st. across. Ch 1, turn
Rows 73 (73, 75, 75, 79, 81, 83) – 80 (82, 86, 86, 90, 94, 96): repeat the last 2 rows. Snip yarn
Opposite side
Row 70 (70, 72, 72, 76, 78, 80): join yarn in st., Ch 2, DC in next st and each st across. Ch 1, turn
Row 71 (71, 73, 73, 77, 79, 81): skip 1st st, SC in next st and each st across. Ch 2, turn
Row 72 (72, 74, 74, 78, 80, 82): DC in next st, and each st across. Ch 1, turn
Rows 73 (73, 75, 75, 79, 81, 83) – 80 (82, 86, 86, 90, 94, 96): repeat the last 2 rows. Snip yarn.
JOIN THE PANELS
Place the panels together and sew with the right side of the DC stitches facing up. Join from the last DC row before the armhole decrease to row 7 at the bottom
ARMHOLE
Start from the front panel, with right side of top facing up. See image 3.
Insert yarn in SC row (the very SC row where you began to decrease for the armhole)
Round 1: Ch 1, Sl st in next st row and each of the st rows up, chain 18 (18,18,20,24,24,26), (without twisting) join (with Sl st.) to the first DC row on back panel, continue to make slip stitches into each of the st rows. Join to the SC row on front panel (the same row where you started Row 1)
Note: for the next row, you will make the SC into the 2 loops of the slip stitch
Round 2: Ch 1, SC into the 1st slip st and each slip st across till the chains, SC into the back bump of each chain, continue to make SC into each of the slip stitches down the armhole. Join to Ch 1 from beginning of the round.
Round 3: Ch 1, SC into the 1st st and each st around. Join to the Ch 1
Round 4: repeat round 3. After blocking the top, I noticed that there was room to add 2 more rounds. This is optional, you can add two more rounds if you want. Snip yarn, weave in tails.
Repeat the same process for the second armhole, starting at the back panel
NECKLINE & SPLIT AT THE BACK
This part is worked from the back all the way to the front, then to the back again.
Round 1: Join yarn into the first stitch row at the split, chain 1, slip stitch into the next st row, and into each st. row down. Sl st into the 2 sts at the bottom of the split (see image below), continue to slip st. up the split on the other side.
After slip stitching on the split rows, Ch 1 to proceed to the neckline, SC between each DC sts except the last one. Connect the last DC st to the next SC row on the strap with DC2tog. (take note that this row is the ‘upside down’ of the chains we made for the strap, so you will be working under the two loops of the chain stitch). This is the corner.
Continue along the strap till the 2nd corner, repeat the DC2tog for that corner
SC into each st across the front, except the last st. at the 3rd corner, DC2tog
SC into each ‘upside down’ chains along the strap, except the last st on the corner, DC2tog
SC into each st across the remaining sts. Continue to work on the split
After the last SC, Chain 4 (the buttonhole), Sl st into the side of the st row (that same st where you just did the last SC).
NOW, continue on to the slip sts, make SC into each of the slip sts, the same way you did on the armhole.
At the bottom (see image below) of the split where you have 2 slip sts, SC2tog in those slip sts.
Continue to make SC into each slip st up the row
Finish with slip st in the Ch 1 on the last st row. SEW THE BUTTON ONTO THE TOP.
TRIM THE BOTTOM CORNERS
Join yarn in st. Ch 1, SC into same st row, SC next 6 st rows, on the other side, SC into each of the 7 st rows. Ch 1, Sl st to bottom of last st. row. Snip yarn. Repeat on the opposite side. Weave in all tails.
