Before we proceed, I want you to know that this pattern is part of the 2024 Christmas in July make-along hosted by Marie at the Undergroundcrafter blog. You will find many other lovely handmade designs you can make as you begin to plan towards the Christmas holiday.
This crochet hotpad uses the popcorn stitch. At first, it may be a bit tedious to crochet the popcorns due to the twisting and turning of the hook, but it gets better as you go along. After making the first popcorn stitch design on this blog I knew I wanted to explore the stitch again with more designs. The popcorn stitch is also one of the best crochet stitches to make thick crochet fabric. It serves its purpose well in creating this ecofriendly hotpad.
The pattern consists three pieces- one full circle of fabric and two semi circles, which will be joined to the back of full circle fabric. Each round is joined before proceeding to the next.
COTTON OR ACRYLIC YARN?
I would recommend cotton yarn for this pattern, because it handles heat better. If you used an acrylic yarn for this pattern the heat would flatten the fabric and ‘kill’ it, thus rendering it useless. You can be creative with your use of yarn as well, so if you have cotton yarns of the same weight lying around, you can mix them up to create this crochet hotpad.
