Wowza! I completely stepped out of my comfort zone with this 12 inch Crochet Octagon Square. You will want to read the story behind making this square.

Seriously, when I signed up for the Stash Busting Crochet Along with Heather from The Unraveled Mitten, I had no idea what kind of square to make. This is square number 12 in the crochet along, I encourage you to check out squares 1-11 from other fabulous designers on the Heather’s blog.
I had never made a crochet square that was bigger than 4 or 5 inches and when I say square I mean worked in the rounds, not rows.
Okay, full disclosure, I have actually made a square that is bigger than 5 inches; that was a Granny Square but I am not going to count that because you can find the granny square pattern EVERYWHERE and you follow the same sequence throughout.
Rounds 18 and 19 were the parts I most struggled with so I made 3 extra squares to ensure that the Helix crochet square was up to 12 inches. I literally did a whoop when I completed the square.
You can make the Helix inspired crochet square into a bag, blanket (of course), poncho, even a scarf or shawl depending on how adventurous you are.
CONSTRUCTION
I will not say this pattern is easy neither will I say it is hard, but I will tell you you can absolutely make it. In less than 4 hours you can get it done.
It follows a specific sequence of colour changing, and you need to be familiar with taller stitches like the Treble, Double Treble, Triple Treble and Quadruple Treble crochets. These are used on the last two rounds.
I have listed a ‘how to’ section so that you can refer to it when making the trebles. You can purchase the printable PDF for ease of access.
