I currently live a very hot country, so once it is March we begin to anticipate the heat. By June and July it is at its peak and sunglasses become one of our most used accessories.
It so happens that I lost my sunglass case, so what better time to crochet a sunglass case than in this desert heat? Plus, it was a quick summer crochet project to make.
I have been working with this wavy crochet stitch on a couple of yarny projects (which will be revealed in time). I am not sure of its original name, but I have seen it called Gem stitch in a crochet book I own. Talking of books, the one featured in the photo has been wonderful to read. The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down is all about mindful and conscious living and I am loving every moment of reading it.
I aim to explore the stitch design by creating at least five projects with it, and this crochet sunglass case is one of many. The Summer Crochet Cover-Up is another design that uses this stitch technique in a different and lacy way.
Did you know you could also use this case for oil bottles? That was not the plan when I made the sunglass case, but it turned out useful for it. Depending on the brand, it could fit five essential oil bottles.
CONSTRUCTION
This sunglass crochet case is made in rounds, except for the last few upper rows. You will need to know how to do the Foundation Single Crochet technique, if you do not, it is alright. This video tutorial explains just how to do it. On Round 1, we will use the FSC technique. As seen below, you begin working the opposite side from the last stitch.

Finished Size: 6.2” wide/3.2” tall
Materials:
- his pattern uses Worsted Weight, medium 4 Cotton yarn. The one used in this pattern is DROPS Paris 50g/75mtrs. Substitute with Paintbox Yarns cotton aran. Col A- brown, Col B-mustard
- 4mm hook (4.5mm for slightly larger case)
- Tapestry Needle
- Stitch markers
Stitches/Abbreviation
- SC- single crochet
- DC- double crochet
- CH- chain
- FSC- foundation single crochet
Notes:
- The Pattern uses U.S terms
- The 1st st is the same st where you joined the previous round
- Ch 2 counts as 1 stitch
- From round 10, place stitch markers in first and last stitches
- ‘bottom stitch’ is round 9, where you will be joining each row
