Hello Craftee, have you ever done a tapestry crochet design? This tapestry crochet tutorial for beginners will guide you through making a simple tapestry crochet piece.

If you already know how to do the tapestry crochet technique, then you can use this pattern to make a coaster, or join two pieces to make a small, cute cardholder, like the bean stitch cardholder.

To me, tapestry crochet is like painting with yarn. It is such a versatile technique that allows your imagination to soar, and encourages self expression. It become easier the more practice using it for projects.

Tapestry crochet is done with basic stitches- single crochet, half double crochet or double crochet. You would usually need to follow a painted chart for tapestry crochet, the pattern will explain how the chart is represented, how many stitches per block or rows. Colours are sometimes labeled by number or letters or by just their name; like I have done in the pattern below. Colours can also be more than two and you may be working with all of them on the same row or round.

TIPS FOR THE BEST TAPESTRY CROCHET PIECE
  • Yarn and hook- i have found that using a smaller hook than recommended for a yarn gives better results; neater yarn transitions, tighter look and ‘hidden’ yarn. Say a yarn states 5mm hook on the wrap, I would usually use a 4 or 4.5mm hook depending on the thickness of the yarn.
  • When changing yarns, pull the previous working yarn forward a little bit to create a tightness around the side, this will help that last stitch to be even with the rest.
  • If you are making a pattern, ensure that you make a swatch first. This will help determine how big or small the item will turn out.
