I am so glad to finally be sharing this Tapestry Crochet Baby Blanket pattern with you. This is one of those crochet blankets that started out as an entirely different design, which turned into something lovely. This post will guide you on crocheting this blanket, which I have named the Chevy Waves Baby Blanket.

Naming this crochet blanket Chevy Waves Baby Blanket was inspired by the wavy pattern that mimics the crochet chevron stitch. Each wave is made in both ascending and descending numbers of stitches in each colour to form the shape. If you use the same yarn or similar in this tapestry crochet baby blanket pattern, you will find it super cozy and warm, smooth to the touch and thick- just perfect for keeping little ones comfortable.

Perhaps you would rather make a smaller project first, you can experiment with the Geoprint Pouch or the Diamond Wall Hanging pattern. These crochet patterns use tapestry crochet, and it would be a good way to practice before making a larger project like the Chevy Waves Baby Blanket.

NEW TO TAPESTRY CROCHET?

If you have never tried tapestry crochet, I highly encourage you to. I would consider it a ‘must-know’ crochet technique, because of the versatility it gives you to use colour in beautiful ways. I encourage you to learn tapestry crochet with this written pictorial and this video tutorial; very useful guides as you begin this exciting technique.

YARN

This tapestry crochet baby blanket uses super chunky polyester yarn. You want to be conscious of the OEKO-TEX standard of the yarn, especially since it will be used for babies and toddlers. The OEKO-TEX standard ensures that there are no harmful chemicals in the yarn and that they are safe for human skin. This pattern uses Himalaya Dolphin Baby, 100% micro polyester yarn. I did some research and found King Cole Yummy to be a good substitute.

CUSTOMISE

As mentioned before, this is a pattern that can be customised in different baby blanket sizes. Bearing in mind that this is handmade, the sizes could vary from machine made ones, stretching can occur due to blocking of the handmade blanket.

This tapestry crochet baby blanket is done in a multiple of eleven (11) chains plus 1. That means, 11 in as many places as the length you want (say, 11 x 8), then add 1 extra chain. You will find the chart a great guide to help you picture your blanket as you progress.

Below is a list that gives basic blanket sizes from stroller to swaddling blanket, use this (or any other preferred) guide to determine the number of chains to begin with, measure the chain to see how long it is before you start the project. Bear in mind also that there are two (2) rounds of the border- around half an inch, which will add to the overall width and length of the Chevy Waves Baby Blanket.

  • Stroller- 30 x 36in/76 x 92cm
  • Receiving- 40 x 40in/100 x 100cm
  • Crib- 42 x 52in/106 x 132cm
  • Swaddling- 48 x 48in/122 x 122cm
