Lorilane Chunky Crochet Sweater Vest

The Lorilane Chunky Crochet Sweater Vest is named after the sweet lady who gifted me the yarn. Her name is Lori, and anytime she travelled, she would bring me yarn- God bless her. Believe it or not, gifting crochet or knit designers yarn is always one of the top items we appreciate (speaking for myself, anyway). As my crochet motto goes, “yarn is always welcome”; because the ideas are so many.

Working with chunky yarn is one of the best ways to wrap up projects quickly, and even though I do not work with chunky yarn often, because I find it too heavy, it gave a refreshing take on completing the Lorilane chunky crochet sweater vest at a quicker pace. Plus, this particular chunky yarn is so soft, with a beautiful colourway.

Chunky Crochet Sweater Vest 1

Since this is my first chunky crochet sweater vest design and also my first design of 2025 on Yarn Cratee, I am gifting it to myself; which is befitting, considering that I am taking part in the “Gift to Myself Me” crochet-along hosted by Marie of The Underground Crafter. You can find all the details here, enter the giveaway, and also follow along with other crochet designers whose designs interest you. In addition, you can:

  • share your progress and show your finished pieces using the hashtag #gifttomyself and #undergroundcrafter across your social media channels.
  • join the underground crafters facebook group.

BLOCKING

It would be remiss of me if I do not mention that you need to block this chunky crochet sweater vest. This is a chunky fabric, and because it is a garment, the only way to have any drape is to block it. You will also notice that by blocking it the fabric can stretch further to close the ribbing at the bottom.

The Lorilane Crochet Sweater Vest comes in six sizes- small to 3xl. Usually, all patterns on Yarn Craftee that come in multiple sizes are featured for free, however, with the increasing theft of independent crochet designers’ intellectual property, I am unable to share all the sizes on the blog. The sizes featured here are the medium and large sizes only. For all sizes, please visit one of the shops below for an ad-free version.

RIBBING– keep your tension even throughout each piece of ribbing.

For the ribbings, there is a formula I have used to calculate the number of rows to make for each size.

Each row of DC on the body is equal to 2 rows of SC on the ribbing and each row of HDC on the body is equal to 1 row of SC on the ribbing. For instance, 3 rows of DCs on the body will be 6 rows of SCs on the ribbing.

Bottom

Row 1: Ch 10, SC in 2nd ch for hook and across (9 sts). Ch 1, turn

Row 2: working in FLO, SC in 1st st and across. Ch 1, turn

Row 4: working in FLO, SC in 1st st and across. Ch 1, turn

Rows 5-58 (64): repeat rows 3 & 4. Snip yarn, leave tail to join to the body.

Armhole

Row 1: Ch 6, SC in 2nd ch for hook and across (5 sts). Ch 1, turn

Row 2: working in FLO, SC in 1st st, and nxt 3 sts. SL ST in last st. Ch 1, turn

Row 3: working in BLO, SL ST in 1st st, SC in remaining sts across. Ch 1, turn

Row 4: working in FLO, SC in 1st st, and nxt 3 sts. SL ST in last st. Ch 1, turn

Rows 5-64 (68): repeat rows 3 & 4.

Neckline

Repeat the same instructions for the Armhole. Finish on row 74 (76)

JOINING

Bottom row: Join ribbings by attaching 1 row of DC on the Body to 2 rows of SC on the ribbing AND join 1 row of HDC on the Body to 1 row of SC on the ribbing.

Ensure that you are joining with the wrong side of the fabric facing up, which is the smooth side.

Neckline: Next, join the shoulders of the front and back panels. Then, proceed to join the neckline using the same formula. Join the ribbing from one of the sides of the shoulders AND with the SLIP STITCH part facing away. Thus, you are joining the SC (wider part) to the neckline. For the sides of the neckline, you only need to join 1 HDC stitch to 1 SC stitch row.

Armhole: next, we will join the sides, then proceed to armhole ribbing. We will follow the same method as with the neckline. The video tutorial is a handy guide for this whole process.

When you join the sides, you can leave the ribbing side open or closed (as you prefer). I would recommend that you leave it open. Then, AFTER blocking and trying it on, you can then decide if you want to close it or leave as is.
