This Heart Shaped Crochet Bookmark is one that will be used for a long time, because if you are like me who reads a number of books halfway and folds it into an ear to get back to later, you will find the mellow heart crochet bookmark quite useful.

This piece is named Mellow Heart Crochet Bookmark, because there is something about reading a physical book that is calming and keeps one in a thoughtful state, and using the mellow heart crochet bookmark is a reminder of the tremendous effects reading a (hard copy) book has on us.

YARN

I was a bit concerned when I first decided to design this Heart Shaped Crochet Bookmark with lace yarn. Even though I generally prefer lighter weight yarns, lace yarn was something new to me and entirely different- just.so.tiny

The major reason for using the lace yarn was to create a piece that would be flat inside the book, so that it does not look bulky within its pages. Another reason was to try something different, since I had never worked with lace weight yarn.

You may never have worked with lace yarn, but I think that this heart shaped crochet bookmark is a cool project to get your hands trying another yarn weight. You can also make this for a galentine gift for your besties and book lovers you know.

CONSTRUCTION

The Mellow Heart Crochet Bookmark is worked in rows- 23 rows. It is pretty straightforward, uses the single crochet stitch throughout, except at the very end where double crochet is used to make the fancy ‘tail’ at the bottom of the heart.

I think that you would find this pattern easy to make, there’s a video tutorial to guide as well, it may take a little time because of the thinness of the yarn (especially if it is your first time using it), but it can be done in a couple of hours in a day. You could even make two of them in a day if you had the time.

CUSTOMISE

If you noticed in the photo, there are 3 ways you can design this heart shaped crochet bookmark:

  • Make in one colour without the ‘tail’
  • Make in one colour with the ‘tail’
  • Make in two colours- a different colour for each side

Row 23: skip 1st st, SC in nxt 4 sts. do not snip yarn, proceed to trimming.

Continuing from last row, SC in nxt 5 st rows, slip stitch into the skipped st on Row 18

Continue to make SC up the curve into the next 5 stitch rows, SC into each of the 4 sts at the top.

SC down the sides of each st row, you will make 22 SCs on the side (minus those 4 sts you just worked into at the top of the curve). The last SC on this side will fall into the very 1st st on Row 1.

Now let’s continue to make SCs on the other side of the heart

Chain 3, SC into the same 1st st, SC up into each stitch row (you should, again, have 22 sts on this side), SC into the last 4 sts at the top, snip yarn, weave in tails.

JOINING

With the right sides of the two hearts facing inward, starting from the bottom, count 15 sts up

Start joining through the back loops of both sides from that stitch all the way down, join the chain 3 as well, count again up to the 15th stitch, place stitch marker in there, join from down all the way up to the marked stitch.

To have a firmer joining, pass the yarn again through each of the stitches (all the way back to the beginning of the join), tie tails, weave in and snip.

Now, turn the heart inside out- we want the right sides of the single crochet stitches to be facing out.

For the little tails at the bottom:

Join yarn into the bottom of the stitch (that one on Row 1- you will notice a small space there),

Ch 2, 4 DC, slip stitch, 4 DC all into the same stitch. Snip yarn, weave in tails.
