Hello Craftees, do you ever get bored of using only the same stitch design for your projects? I know that I do, so I’m always on the look out for crochet stitch patterns that I have never tried. When I came across this easy crochet stitch pattern, I knew it was one I had to share.

While I do not know the original name for this easy crochet stitch, when I came across it, it was called the Open Waves Crochet Stitch. You know, it seems a lot of crochet stitch designs have evolved over the years, with some having a modified name or some stitch variation, I however like to stay true to the original form of any crochet stitch design that I come across. Anyhow, let’s accept that this easy crochet stitch design is actually named Open Waves Crochet Stitch and go with it.
Why I Really Like This Open Waves Crochet Stitch
The answer is simple- it is super easy to memorise, and it works up fast. Even though I have only designed one crochet item with it, I have a myriad of ideas in my head for this quick crochet stitch pattern.
Items To Make With This Easy Crochet Stitch Pattern
- Crochet top
- Scarf
- A ‘summery’ vest

- and any other item you can dream up

Open Waves Crochet Stitch Multiples
As mentioned before, this is a very easy crochet stitch pattern to memorise. It is done in multiples of ten, plus four or five.
If you wanted to start with a Single Crochet stitch, you would make a multiple of ten, plus 4 stitches.
if you wanted to start with a Double Crochet stitch, you would make a multiple of ten, plus 5 stitches. Reason for this is, the first 3 chains will stand as the first double crochet stitch.

Easy and Quick Crochet Stitch Pattern Tutorial
Materials:
- Yarn of choice
- Appropriate hook size for yarn
Stitches/Abbreviation:
- SC- single crochet
- DC- double crochet
- CH- chain
- ST- stitch
Starting with Single Crochet
Make a multiple of 10 chains. Example, chain 20 or 30, now add 4 more chains. You will have 24 or 34 (depending on how many you started with).

Row 1: SC in 2nd chain from hook and next 2 chains, *skip 2 chs, DC in next 3 chs, skip 2 chs, SC in next 3 chs. Repeat from * across the row. Turn.

For the next row, you can either do a Chain 3 or Chain 1 at the beginning (if you do a Chain 3, that becomes the 1st stitch on the row)
Row 2: Ch 1, DC into the 1st st., and next 2 sts., *Ch 3, skip Ch 3, SC in next 3 sts, Ch 3, skip Ch 3, DC in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across the row. Turn.
Alternative Row 2: Ch 3, DC into the next 2 sts., *Ch 3, skip Ch 3, SC in next 3 sts, Ch 3, skip Ch 3, DC in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across the row. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, SC into 1st st, and next 2 sts, *Ch 3, skip Ch 3, DC in next 3 sts, Ch 3, skip Ch 3, SC in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across the row. Turn.

From here, you repeat rows 2 and 3 as much as you need to to memorise the stitch pattern.
What if you were beginning with Double Crochet?
Make a multiple of 10 chains. Example, chain 20 or 30, now add 5 more chains. You will have 25 or 35 (depending on how many you began with).
Remember- Chain 3 at the beginning of the row counts as the 1st Double Crochet
Row 1: DC in 4th chain from hook and next chain, *skip 2 chs, SC in next 3 chs, skip 2 chs, DC in next 3 chs. Repeat from * across the row. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, SC into the 1st st., and next 2 sts., *Ch 3, skip Ch 3, DC in next 3 sts, Ch 3, skip Ch 3, SC in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across the row. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 3, DC into the next 2 sts., *Ch 3, skip Ch 3, SC in next 3 sts, Ch 3, skip Ch 3, DC in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across the row. Turn.
Cons of starting the Row with Double Crochet

Is there anything you notice at from 3 rows in the stitch photo above? Notice those small gaps at the beginning of the Double Crochet rows? Well, it may not really be a con, because not every one minds if there are avoidable gaps like that in their crochet fabric.
The Chain 3 from the Double Crochet leaves a wide gap between stitches; something that seems to be a pet peeve for me. But as mentioned above, it may be of little to no concern to some.
If the wide gap between the stitches is a concern, and you want to start the pattern with Double Crochet, make 2 Chains at the beginning of the DC rows, instead of Chain 3. Alternatively, you can begin with Chain 1 and work the Double Crochet into the 1st stitch. This way, the gaps will be minimised.
You see, the Open Waves Crochet Stitch is an easy and quick pattern to memorise and make. I hope you find inspiration using this Quick Crochet Stitch pattern to make something you like.
